Note: All major sections should have introductory paragraphs (i.e. headings should not come one after another without text in between).
In-text citations:
In-text citations are to use the author-date style of APA (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition). Source citations for direct quotations must provide page numbers as well as author(s) and date. Sources with three or more authors provide only the first author's name followed by et al. as in Smith et al., 1999.
Notes:
To be placed at the end of the paper, before References section. To be numbered consecutively.
References:
Manuscripts are to use APA style. To appear in a References section, all sources listed must be referred to in the text. Otherwise, the section is a bibliography.
References need to include complete information: date, page numbers of articles or chapters, complete names for institutions and organizations rather than abbreviations or acronyms. References from conference or other proceedings also need page numbers. Examples of the most common types of references are given below.
Use hanging indent paragraph style.
- Journal article:
Ash, C. (2000). Towards a new cost-aware evaluation framework. Educational Technology and Society, 3 (4), 126-131.
- Note: Only first word of title, proper nouns, and the first word following a colon (:) in the title are capitalized. Volume number of journal is in italics as is the journal title. pp. is not used before the page numbers.
- Book:
Bates, A. W. (1995). Technology, open learning and distance education. London: Routledge.
- More than one author:

- Conference Proceedings:

Note: Date of retrieval is provided.
Figures and tables:
All figures and tables need to be referred to at the appropriate points in the text. They should be imbedded in the manuscript (i.e. not all grouped together at the end) in the logical location for reference, appear in consecutive order, and be centred.
Capitalize all references to tables and figures (e.g. "...number of users is greater as shown in Figure 1", "See Table 2 below.").
Figures and tables should be numbered in order throughout the text, and each requires a title. These are to appear above the figures and tables. Where appropriate sources of data are to be indicated at the bottom of the figure in parentheses.

Equations:
Equations should be centered on the page, with a blank line above and below. They should be numbered consecutively through the paper, using Arabic numbers in parentheses at the right-hand margin.
Lists:
Unless items in the list are lengthy, lists should be indented. Items should be bulleted with 2-3 spaces between bullet and text. One space before and after the list. Bullet style: round, black.
NOTES ON USAGE
- Terms:
the Web or the World Wide Web
the Internet
e-mail
e-health
online
- Hyphens and Dashes:
Hyphens are used to connect words so they in effect become one term (e.g. e-mail). Numbers are connected by en dashes (e.g. 47-38). In Word this dash can be inserted with crtl+num-. Related terms and phrases are connected by an em dash (which functions in the same way a colon (:) does. (e.g. LearnCom - A System for Setting Up an Electronic Community). The em dash should have a space before and after. In Word this dash can be inserted by Ctrl+Alt+num-.
- Acroynms and abbreviations:
Acroynms and abbreviations for organizations or agencies should be explained in their first use, such as the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV). To abbreviate the name of an organization or agency to the initial letters, use capitals and no periods.
- Use of italics:
Use italics sparingly to identify special terms or to indicate special emphasis.
- He/she:
Where possible use plural nouns and pronouns rather than he/she. For example: rather than "a ...he/she" replace with "...they"
- Spacing after periods:
One space after periods at the end of sentences.
